ABOUT YOUR HOSTS
Clocking up over 20 years as the sole wine maker for two small wineries, Kate has been hands on in all facets of grape and wine production. Stone Bridge Estate was created in partnership with her parents, and Deviation Road with her husband, which gave her the freedom to create the wine styles and have input on the direction for each winery from the beginning – in particular the sparkling wine range. Having lived and studied winemaking in Champagne out of high school, her passion was quickly focused on mastering the art of creating quality sparkling wines within their own regional context.
Hamish has winemaking in his blood. His great-great-grandmother was South Australia’s first female winemaker and his vineyard is one of the oldest in the region. Together with his father, he created Hillstowe wines in 1991, which became a successful international brand. When Hillstowe was sold in 2001, the opportunity arose for Hamish to build his own winery. Joined by Kate later that year, the path forward was set. Hamish occupies a number of roles at Deviation Road - overseeing the business operations, as well as chief tractor driver (and fixer), disgorger, handy man and blending partner.
Kaaren Palmer is one of Australia’s leading authorities on Champagne. A collector, educator and award-winning author, Kaaren is also a Dame-Chevalier of the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne.
Thrown out of university in Adelaide and moving to Sydney, Nick Ryan used the knowledge he’d gained raiding his old man’s cellar to land a job with one of Sydney’s leading wine merchants.
Realising that writing about it was easier than lifting it has led him to where he is now. He’s a wine columnist for The Australia newspaper, a regular contributor Gourmet Traveller Wine and GQ and writes a weekly column musing on life for Adelaide’s Sunday Mail.
He has judged in many Australian and international wine shows and is a graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial.
