Halliday 2021 Wine Companion

We're pleased to again have been awarded a five star rating in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion. Below are the summaries of our most highly ranked wines in this year's edition. 

2013 BELTANA BLANC DE BLANCS 
Given another 12 months on lees since tasted by Ned Goodwin, and seems every bit as fresh as it was when he wrote: ‘This expansive, rich wine has spent an extended 5 years on lees which for me, considering the acid levels, pH and fruit ripeness even in cooler Australian zones, seems just about the maximum level of ambition. A fully loaded nose oozes toasted nuts, marzipan, spiced quince and tarte tatin flavours across a creamy, broad-shouldered core of nourishment. This stains the cheeks and swoons the nose.’ Tasted by James Halliday

2017 SOUTHCOTE BLANC DE NOIR
100% pinot noir clone D2V5, hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, disgorged Oct ‘19, 8g/l dosage. The Deviation Road sparkling wines are, of course, traditional method. The palest salmon; it has very good texture and grip, the dosage nigh on perfect for a blanc de noirs with its dry characters. Tasted by James Halliday

NV ALTAIR BRUT ROSE
A blend of pinot noir and chardonnay grown at Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley, 80% from ‘17. Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, largely fermented in tank, a small percentage of pinot made as a red wine.Delicious rose, with small red fruits/berries, and a supple mouthfeel. Bargain. 2017 MARY’S RESERVE SHIRAZ
Mostly whole berry open-fermented, 12% coming from a 100% whole bunch ferment. Basket-pressed to French oak (30% new) for 16 months maturation. Light to medium-bodied, but buzzing with red berry flavour and texture highlights. Tasted by James Halliday
